Unexpected Comprehension
We didn’t expect it as it crept among us
As we waited at baseball practice
Drove the carpool
Typed hurriedly at our desks
Pondered our reflection in the mirror each night
There was no guideline handed to us
A format with which we could prepare
Our mothers may have understood it
If we’d known enough to ask them
But for most of us it was
An unexpected comprehension:
THIS is what our life IS
There is a moment when we see life
With a clarity that is unparalleled
Crisp as a new snow
Brilliant as the winter sun
Poignant, breathtaking, heartbreaking
The unexpected comprehension:
THIS is what our life IS
Its startling corresponding caveat:
THIS is what our life WILL be
Suddenly, the sweetness of all we’d dreamed
Mellows into an acceptance of what is
The dissonance of the two varies with each of us
Depending upon how diligently we’ve pursued those dreams
Crafted them into the reality that is our life
Eventually, the dissonance resolves itself
Into a pure, clear harmonic tone
Some dance to its music
Others ache with the longing of what could have been
But we breathe into it, allow it to settle into our being
The tune we hum through the rest of our lives.
